Announcement on AI Policy Formulation

ABEJA, Inc., (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, CEO: Yousuke Okada; hereinafter “ABEJA”), a company that realizes digital transformation of industries through collaboration between AI and people, has compiled and formulated its own AI policy in January 2022. ABEJA will apply this policy to existing and new projects to unify our understanding about AI ethics with the customers and business partners, and to work on AI ethics issues together.

With its vision of “Implementing a Fruitful World”, ABEJA has realized digital transformation (hereinafter referred to as “DX”) for more than 300 customers, making the most of its technological capabilities and expertise such as image analysis and natural language processing, leveraging advanced Machine Learning. ABEJA provides “ABEJA Platform” which is a service we developed in-house and it realizes the collaboration between AI and people, and the fusion of digital and real worlds, which are essential for DX. Through the provision of our services, we collaborate with our customers to build platforms and deploy them to production for continuous operation, thereby transforming the customers’ core business operations and further innovating their business models.

Recently, there has been a growing social and international debate on AI ethics and the importance of AI policies. In response to these trends surrounding AI ethics, we have formulated this AI Policy to guide ABEJA’s development and use of AI. While it is common to all customers that the provision of AI solutions, including AI development support, falls under the category of BtoB business that realizes social innovation, the values and principles that ABEJA should emphasize regarding AI are different for each customer. Therefore, this policy is not about listing values and principles, but rather aims to unify understanding of AI ethics with customers and business partners, and to work on AI ethics issues together.

In 2019, ABEJA inaugurated “Ethical Approach to AI (EAA)”, a committee of external experts to discuss issues related to AI from ethical and legal perspectives. When we come across issues that are difficult to judge based on the guidelines set forth in the AI Policy alone, we will bring them to the EAA to deal with each of them, taking into account EAA’s objective and independent opinions and expertise.
